In 2018, Yvonne Demriel completed her master’s thesis “Straight textbooks”. In the paper she mapped out how the LGBTQ population was presented in Norwegian textbooks for high school, and she describes her findings as disheartening. “The LGBTQ population is constantly caricatured, invisible or exposed to negativism in the books”, says Demirel. How can teachers provide good and norm-critical education if the textbooks lack diverse information about gender and sexuality? How can we put in place a teaching that includes the diversity of society?
