Event Details

This panel discussion is organised in collaboration with Masahat to commemorate the passing of Sarah Hegazi. She was an Egyptian LGBTIQ activist who was faced with multiple forms of violence and died by suicide while fighting for her rights. Sarah Hegazi is a symbol of the fight for equality and human rights, the multiple forms of violence through which homophobia is expressed, and the consequences of homophobia on the individual.

Hegazi’s passing represents a wakeup call for Middle East society and activists – and underlines the importance of solidarity. We will discuss on the social consequences of violent homophobia, the importance of solidarity, and the importance of supporting progress through organisations working to advance the rights and freedom of LGBTIQ community and individuals.
